Charting a bull-trend pullback, S&P 500 tests first support (3,100)

U.S. stocks are lower early Thursday, pressured as the China-U.S. trade saga continues to unfold. In the process, the S&P 500 has extended a pullback from record territory, a downturn thus far underpinned by its first notable support (3,100).

Pelosi says House may not vote on USMCA by year's end

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday suggested a House vote on the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement might not come by year's end. The California Democrat's comment at her weekly news conference raised some doubts about the trade pact's prospects after she sparked optimism a week ago by saying a USMCA breakthrough appeared "imminent." When asked if she needed to make a deal with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer this week in order to have a House vote in December, Pelosi said: "I'm not even sure if we came to an agreement today that it would be enough time to finish." Pelosi was expected to meet with Lighthizer on Thursday.

Stocks saw a mostly lower start Thursday, struggling for direction as investors assessed the latest developments surrounding U.S.-China trade talks. The Wall Street Journal reported that China's top trade negotiator, Vice Premier Liu He, invited his U.S. counterparts to Beijing for face-to-face talks. News reports have indicated talks toward a so-called phase one deal have stalled over a variety of issues, including the rollback of existing U.S. tariffs and China's purchases of U.S. farm products.

China invites U.S. trade negotiators for more talks: WSJ
