Home Depot's stock rises toward record high ahead of earnings report

Shares of Home Depot Inc. rose 0.5% toward a record high in afternoon trading Monday, ahead of the home improvement retailer's fiscal third-quarter results due out before Tuesday's opening bell. For the quarter ended in October, the company is expected by analysts to report earnings per share for the of $2.52, total sales of $27.53 billion and same-store sales growth of 4.7%, according to FactSet. Analyst Elizabeth Suzuki at Bank of America Merrill Lynch said the recent rally in the stock prices suggests investors are anticipating an acceleration in renovation demand from lower interest rates. She reiterated her neutral rating. "While rates are lower and the US consumer remains healthy, some key housing tailwinds such as home price appreciation are moderating which could cause renovation spending to decelerate next year," Suzuki wrote in a note to clients. Credit Suisse analyst Seth Sigman said the stock price reflects expectations that the demand has inflected higher. "Our data points support a relatively in line quarter," Sigman wrote. "We think at this level it will need to deliver at least in line [same-store sales] and point to clear evidence that demand is accelerating, and maintaining its comps guidance." The stock has rallied 17.1% over the past three months, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average has gained 8.3%.

President Trump meets with Fed Chairman Powell to discuss economy

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on Monday met with President Trump, a frequent critic, to discuss the economy and interest rates, but his comments were similar to what Powell has already said publicly, the central bank said in a statement. "Chair Powell's comments were consistent with his remarks at his congressional hearings last week. He did not discuss his expectations for monetary policy, except to stress that the path of policy will depend entirely on incoming information that bears on the outlook for the economy," the Fed said. Trump has repeatedly and harshly attacked the Fed for not cutting interest rates faster and more steeply. It was the first meeting between the two men since Trump began his barrage of criticism earlier this year.
