EBay's stock tumbles as downbeat outlook prompts analyst downgrades

Shares of eBay Inc. tumbled 8.8% in premarket trading Thursday, putting them on track to open at a 4 1/2-month low, after the e-commerce company's third-quarter results and downbeat revenue outlook prompted Raymond James analyst Aaron Kessler to back away from his bullish view, as the company's 2020 earnings growth guidance was "materially below" his estimate. Kessler downgraded eBay to market perform from outperform, but kept his stock price target at $45, saying he believes the stock is now "fairly valued," and are likely to remain "range-bound" until 2021. Other than the eBay's downbeat guidance, Kessler is concerned about continued softness in gross merchandise volume (GMV) for both the U.S. and international and slower growth in the company's StubHub and Classifieds businesses. According to FactSet, no less than three of the 35 analysts surveyed have downgraded eBay and 14 analysts cut their price targets, while two analysts raised their targets. SunTrust Robinson Humphrey's Youssef Squali nudged his target up to $40 from $39, saying that while guidance was disappointing and the operating review conclusions were "underwhelming," the strategic review update was a "modest positive." The stock had soared 39.7% year to date through Wednesday, while the S&P 500 has gained 19.9%.

Ebay stock falls after weak outlook; update on StubHub to come before next earnings

EBay Inc. shares fell more than 2.5% in the extended session Wednesday after the company issued below-consensus fourth-quarter revenue guidance and said it would have an update on StubHub before the next earnings release. The e-commerce company reported third-quarter net income of $310 million, or 37 cents a share, compared with $721 million, or 73 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Adjusted earnings were 67 cents a share. Revenue was flat at $2.65 billion, compared to the year-ago period. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had estimated adjusted earnings of 64 cents a share on revenue of $2.65 billion. Former Chief Executive Devin Wenig resigned from eBay amid an activist fight in September; Elliott Management and Starboard Financial are pressuring eBay to spin off StubHub and Classifieds, a move that Wenig disagreed with. In its financial release, eBay said it would have an update on the StubHub business before the next earnings release. For the fourth quarter, analysts model adjusted earnings of 76 cents and sales of $2.85 billion. EBay said it expects adjusted earnings of 73 cents to 76 cents a share on sales of $2.77 billion to $2.82 billion. EBay stock has gained 40% this year, with the S&P 500 index rising 20%.
