Nvidia Could Ride the Next Big Artificial Intelligence Trend

Bank of America Merrill Lynch is getting more optimistic on Nvidia shares, forecasting big demand from the artificial-intelligence market in the coming years.

Nvidia's stock surges to pace chip gainers after BofA boosts price target

Shares of Nvidia Corp. rallied 4.3% in morning trading, putting them on track to close at an 11-month high, after BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Vivek Arya said he was more bullish on the graphics chip maker, citing "unrivaled" data center growth prospects. The stock's gain was enough to pace the 29 of 30 components of the PHLX Semiconductor Index that were gaining ground. Arya reiterated his buy rating on Nvidia's stock and lifted the price target to $250, which is 29% above current levels, from $225. "[Nvidia's] data center growth is on the cusp of benefiting from the next-big [artificial intelligence] landmark--the ability to accurately listen, understand, speak and contextualize human speech, referred to as natural language processing (NLP)/conversational AI," Arya wrote in a note to clients. While Nvidia's cloud spending remains weak near term, gaming sales are recovering and second-half 2019 data center sales could be muted, Arya sees Nvidia producing "the best organic growth" among large-capitalization semiconductor companies heading into 2020, driven by new ray-tracing-based gaming cycle and first use of high-performance 7 nanometer manufacturing technology. The stock has run up 16.3% over the past three months, while the chip sector index has gained 6.7% and the S&P 500 has slipped 0.7%.

Tech Stocks Rally on News of a Trade Agreement

Reports that trade talks were going well gave a particular lift to semiconductor stocks, almost all of which have huge exposure to the Chinese market.

AMD's stock surges to pace semiconductor peers

Shares of semiconductor companies are broadly higher Friday, led by the surge in Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s stock , amid upbeat industry data and a sharp rally in the broader stock market after a report of a U.S.-China trade truce. The PHLX Semiconductor Index hiked up 3.0%, with all 30 components gaining ground. The chip sector tracker (SOX) was now just 1.2% away from its July 24 record close. The biggest gainer in the index was AMD's stock, which ran up 6.0%. Analyst David Wong at Instinet noted that Gartner estimated that worldwide PC shipments in the September quarter rose 8.0% from the previous quarter, and grew 1.1% year over year. Wong wrote in a note to clients Friday that he thinks the solid overall PC environment is "good for AMD," and that AMD will likely benefit from continuing market share momentum. Among the SOX's other more-active components, shares of Micron Technology Inc. climbed 5.6%, Intel Corp. rallied 2.8% and Nvidia Corp. hiked up 2.5%. Over the past three months, AMD shares have still slumped 9%, while the SOX has run up 8.6% and the S&P 500 has eased 0.4%.

Nvidia stock rises after RBC gets more bullish

Nvidia Corp. shares are up 2.2% in Monday morning trading after RBC analyst Mitch Steves raised his target price on the stock to $217 from $190. His channel checks suggest that demand for Nvidia's gaming GPUs is improving and that the data-center business will post a comeback in the January quarter. Steves' projection for a data-center rebound has him more optimistic about Nvidia's potential for sequential margin improvement at the end of the year. "Net net: We think results will be better than expected but our adjustments are modest in nature, as we hope that expectations do not get ahead of themselves (as we saw with Micron's print)," he wrote. Steves has an outperform rating on the shares, which have climbed 16% over the past three months, while the S&P 500 has lost 1.7%.
